5 Tips To Prepare For a Birthday Photo Session
Tips From A Photographer Mom
Planning your child’s birthday session should feel exciting—not overwhelming. Whether you’re celebrating a first birthday with a cake smash or a third birthday with big personality, a little preparation goes a long way toward creating sweet, stress-free memories.
As a mom and professional children’s photographer, I’ve helped lots of families walk into a session relaxed and walk out beaming. Today I’m sharing five tried-and-true tips to help you prepare for a birthday photoshoot you’ll actually enjoy.
Keep Outfits Comfy
As cute as suspender pants or princess tulle may be, make sure your child’s outfit is something they can actually move in. Itchy tags or tight sleeves can quickly lead to meltdowns (and we want smiles!). Soft, flexible fabrics and a backup outfit, just in case, are always smart choices.
I also have a small selection of outfits in the studio, just in case. Ask me about them and I’ll make sure I have them ready for you. There’s never any charge to use them.
Bring a Clean Snack And Water
Snacks can be a lifesaver for toddlers, but skip the crumbly crackers and chocolate smudges. Think: fruit leather, veggie pouches, or marshmallows. Pack a spill-proof water cup, too. Hydrated kids are happy kids!
I have a water cooler in the studio, so we can always refill as needed.
Let Them Explore Before We Start
Give your child a few minutes to settle into the space before expecting smiles. I love to let little ones roam around, peek at props, and get comfortable with the environment (and me!). That natural curiosity often leads to the best photos.
Don’t Stress About Smiles
Really…don’t. Kids are intuitive, and they’ll pick up on your energy. If you’re calm and playful, they’ll be more likely to relax and enjoy the moment. I have lots of tricks up my sleeve to bring out their true personality, whether that’s giggles or quiet wonder. I’ve got you!
Celebrate the Moment, Not the Pose
Sometimes the most beautiful shots aren’t perfectly posed. They’re the ones where your toddler is belly-laughing at bubbles or sneaking frosting off the cake. The goal is to capture your child as they are at this stage of life, not a magazine-perfect version.
